#1 - Another sad song with only major chords
Mr. Conroy has managed to make another sad song entirely consisting of major chords, which are considered to be happy chords as opposed to minor chords. It is the second time anyone has achieved this. The first time was "The darkness" on Mr. Conroy's debut album
#2 - The song is about withdrawal
The song is about withdrawing from the world and looking inward for strength and motivation. “Under the surface” is the place where no one else is present — just you, alone with yourself. As the lyric puts it, it is “a place I both hate and love”.
#3 - Considered title track of the album
The album "Left behind" was dubbed "Under the surface" as a working title. The title was found to mondaine and standard. After "A part of your makeup" (from the song "Tried to die" the title ended up being "left behind".
#4 - Not initially picked as a single
The second single was planned to be "Around and around" until after the album was finished. After showing the songs to a number of friends and collaborators, Remi replaced "Around and around" with "Under the surface" as the 'ballad single' of the album.
#5 - The intro was cut after recording the song
In order to not make the song too long and as it was going to be a single, the piano intro was cut after recording the song.
