#1 - In memory of Rasmus Rasmussen
"Tried to die" was written 10 years after a dear friend and guitarist passed away after struggling with mental illness. The song deals with feelings around having known things were bad and not being able to do much about it. "Tried to die" is one of a number of songs on the album "Left behind" that deals with that friendship and loss.
#2 - First Mr. Conroy guitar solo
The song ends with the first guitar solo by Mr. Conroy followed by a piano outro playing the same theme as the guitar solo.
#3 - Longest song on "Left behind"
"Tried to die" is the longest song on the album "Left behind" with a playing time of 4 minutes and 4 seconds. The song is the closing track on the album.
#4 - Reference to a song from the movie "Still crazy"
The line "and what might have been plays forever" is a reference to a brilliant song "What might have been" on the soundtrack to the 1998 music-comedy film "Still crazy". Rasmus and I liked that movie a lot and watched it numerous times.
#5 - The music video is methaphoric
The music video for the song shows clips from car races. The video continues the Mr. Conroy tradition of using old clips that relate to the music on a methaphorical level.
VERSE 1
It was morning at bootles were open
And you said you’re tired
Not just that night but in general
Of not making it right
VERSE 2
I thought it natural and harmless
Not something to worry about
It turned out the tiredness was heartfelt
I should have listened more
CHORUS
You tried to die
And I thought you’d be allright
Thought you’d hide in spite
Of things worth just one more fight
The drama was part of you make up
in your hide out, you made it right
Then you tried to to die
And this time it was goodbye
VERSE 3
You though your friends didn't know it
But we already knew
At first it seems easy to forget
But the guilt will pursue
VERSE 4
And "what might have been" plays forever
So much to remember you
But time just goes on and I promise
To listen, to listen, to listen
CHORUS
You tried to die
And I thought you’d be allright
Thought you’d hide in spite
Of things worth just one more fight
The drama was part of you make up
in your hide out, you made it right
Then you tried to to die
And this time it was goodbye
BRIDGE
You tried to die
I thought you be alright
You hide in is spite
Of things worth one more fight
